Bhutan Dagala Trek Overview
Known as the Thousand Lakes Trek, this beautiful trail is located in the Thimphu district of Bhutan. The trek begins in Genekha and ends in Chamgang, covering approximately 50 kilometers. It includes crossing four passes, one of which is a high pass that reaches an elevation of 4,500 meters or more. Along the way, you’ll encounter several stunning campsites, making it an excellent introduction to high-altitude alpine trekking.
This five-day trek leads you through an area filled with numerous pristine, crystal-clear lakes. As you walk among these shimmering bodies of water, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the entire Himalayan mountain range, including some of the highest peaks in the world like Mt. Everest, Jomolhari, Masang Gang, Jichu Drake, and Gangche Ta. If you’re fit and comfortable with high-altitude hiking, you can complete the trek in just four nights.
One of the days on the trek will be dedicated to exploring the more picturesque lakes, where you can enjoy fishing and resting. The trail also takes you through several traditional Bhutanese villages, allowing you to experience local village life as you make your way back from the lakes.
While this trek is somewhat strenuous, the tranquility and natural beauty you’ll encounter make it well worth the effort. The best times to undertake this trek are between April and June or from September to October.
