Ladakh is recognized as a distinctive wildlife destination, featuring a diverse array of exotic animals and bird species that thrive in their natural habitats. The region is home to approximately 310 species of birds, including notable types such as the Golden Eagle, Lammergeier, Wallcreeper, Rock Bunting, Black-necked Crane, and Himalayan Snowcock.

Among the unique fauna, the wild yak is native to this area. Other notable animals include the ibex, blue sheep, bharal, and the docile marmot, as well as the mouse hare. The snow leopard stands out as one of Ladakh’s rarest species. Additionally, the kyang, or wild horse, is a distinct inhabitant of these highlands. At lower altitudes, the elusive musk deer is also a rare but valuable sight due to its prized musk.

During a visit to Ladakh, one can expect to encounter various wildlife, including marmots, mouse hares, stone martens, red foxes, wolves, ibex, bharal, and shapu. However, the habitats of certain species, such as the nyan (big-horned sheep), chim (Tibetan antelope known for its luxurious fleece), goa (Tibetan gazelle), lynx, pallas cat, kyang, and brong-dong (wild yak), remain largely unexplored by tourists.

The region is also significant for birdwatching, as thousands of black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, ducks, and other water birds breed near its lakes. Enthusiastic birdwatchers can observe a variety of species, including Bactrian magpies, grey tits, choughs, ravens, sparrows, kites, kestrels, Turkoman rock pigeons, chukors, finches, buntings, larks, and desert wheateaters. Recent surveys have recorded around 73 different bird species, encompassing both migratory and native varieties.
